OVERVIEW

The Summer Palace is China’s largest and best-preserved imperial garden, covering more than 300 hectares of lakes, hills, temples, and elegant pavilions. Originally built in 1750 during the Qing Dynasty and later restored after periods of war, it became the summer retreat of emperors and the favorite residence of Empress Dowager Cixi.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Summer Palace is celebrated as a masterpiece of Chinese landscape design. Kunming Lake, Longevity Hill, the Long Corridor, and the Seventeen-Arch Bridge combine natural beauty with centuries of architectural craftsmanship, creating one of the world’s finest examples of an imperial garden.

Today, the Summer Palace offers far more than historic buildings. Visitors can enjoy peaceful lakeside walks, traditional boat rides, panoramic hilltop views, and beautiful scenery throughout the seasons. Blending royal history with tranquil landscapes, it remains one of Beijing’s most relaxing and rewarding attractions.
