The Li River is the natural and visual heart of Guilin. Although the river extends far beyond the city, its most celebrated section runs approximately 83 kilometers from Guilin toward Yangshuo, passing through some of the finest tower-karst scenery in southern China. Along this route, steep limestone peaks rise directly from flat fields and riverbanks, creating the landscape traditionally described in China as “mountains like jade hairpins and water like a green silk ribbon.”

The Guilin Karst component of the UNESCO-listed South China Karst lies within the Lijiang National Park area and preserves internationally important examples of fenglin tower karst and fengcong cone karst. Rain, underground drainage, and the long dissolution of thick limestone formations shaped the isolated peaks, caves, cliffs, and waterways that make the region so distinctive.

For most first-time visitors, the classic experience is a morning cruise from Mopanshan or Zhujiang Pier near Guilin to Yangshuo. The journey usually lasts around four hours, depending on water level and operating conditions. Is the Li River cruise worth taking?

Yes. It is the most complete and effortless way to experience Guilin’s famous karst landscape. The scenery changes continuously, and the one-way journey also provides a natural transition from Guilin to Yangshuo.

The classic Guilin-to-Yangshuo cruise normally lasts about 3.5–4.5 hours. Water level, weather, navigation restrictions, vessel type, and assigned pier can change the exact duration.

There is no single best side because the river bends constantly and major scenery appears on both sides. A seat near an exit or staircase can be more useful because it allows quick access to the open deck.
